Doris Jeanette Taylor Young (Granny, Granny D), 90 years old of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones.
Doris was born April 25, 1931 in Friona, Texas and was preceded in death by her parents Lillie and Albert (Slim) Taylor and her sister Ethel Ford.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of sixty-nine years, Billy M. Young; her son Mark Young and wife Kym of Ballinger, TX; her daughters, Vikki Hale and husband Ron of Montgomery, TX; Valli Peacher and husband Larry of Bentley, LA; Venetia Young of San Angelo, TX; her sister Mildred Edmonds of Riverside, CA; six grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her greatest joy was her husband and family. She loved traveling, gardening, working crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and feeding the deer and wild turkeys which regularly visited her backyard.
Doris finished nursing school in Amarillo , Texas, and then accepted a job at the old Shannon Hospital, where she cared for polio patients. Soon after arriving in San Angelo, Doris met Billy at Ben Ficklin Dam in 1952. He was in the Air Force and stationed at Goodfellow AFB. They married and spent 21 years traveling to 22 countries overseas and living in various states within the United States.
Once they retired from the Air Force they traveled to all 50 states deciding to settle in San Angelo, TX, where their story had begun twenty-six years earlier. She was a retired nurse and Master Gardener.
The family would like to give special thanks to Kindred Hospice, Dr. Cheruku (her Oncologist); Dr. Kristy Edwards (her General Care doctor), Stephanie and Dr. Eric Igler and their wonderful children, for their support and kind, loving care.
A celebration of life will be held in the near future. Doris loved animals, Texas bluebonnets and California poppies. Should one wish to honor Doris’ memory, consider supporting a local animal shelter or planting a tree or wildflowers.
