Odis Buryl Smith, 98, of Carlsbad, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 10, 2021, in Walsenburg, Colorado. Odis was born September 27, 1923, in Camp Verde, Texas to Lewis Albert Smith and Noma Tillie Jones Smith. He grew up in the Hill Country area of Texas and after graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy. Odis served his country honorably from 1941 to 1946. He moved to San Angelo after the service and started working for M Systems as a butcher.
Odis soon met the love of his life Betty Jean Plevan and after only three weeks they married on May 27, 1946. They shared 73 beautiful years together and raised two children. Odis worked for many years with M Systems, but in 1970 he left to open College Hills Meat Market. In 1988, he moved his family out to their family farm in Carlsbad and opened Lake Gardens Beef Processing. Odis retired from the family business after 20 years of dedicated service to his customers.
He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather who devoted his life to his family. Odis had an incredible work ethic and a strong faith in the Lord. He was an incredibly giving and caring person and was always ready to help a neighbor or friends when the need arose. Odis loved helping others so much that he volunteered his time at the Shannon Auxiliary for many years as well.
When he wasn’t working or volunteering at the hospital, he enjoyed being with his family and brothers and sisters and laughing and telling jokes with everyone. His strong work ethic and years of and of service to others will remain in our hearts forever and we will dearly miss him!
Odis was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters and his wife Betty Jean. He is survived by his daughter, Daneshu Robison and her husband Duane Schoon, of Walsenburg, Co; his son, Rick Smith, and his wife Debby, of San Angelo; his grandchildren, Clint Smith, of San Angelo, Sarah Field, and her husband Lonnie, of San Angelo, Scott Robison, of Fort Worth, D.
