Geneva Eggemeyer Kahlich Russell of San Angelo, age 93, passed away on Monday, February 15, 2021 at Regency House Nursing Home. An Open Viewing will be at Harper Funeral Home on Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Due to Covid, there will only be a graveside service at 1:00 p.m. at Englewood West Cemetery, Slaton, Texas on Friday, February 19, 2021 Tuesday, February 23 (changed due to weather). Arrangements by Harper Funeral Home.
Geneva was born at Olfen, Texas on June 29,1927, the first child of Walter John and Alma Ocker Eggemeyer. She attended Olfen public school ten years, graduating from Ballinger High School in 1945 and San Angelo Business College in 1946. She was secretary in the Runnels County Extension Agents offices and later in the M-System Food Stores office in San Angelo.
In St. Boniface Church, Olfen she married Albin A. "Shorty" Kahlich September 9, 1957. They farmed west of Slaton until his death on December 15, 1974. She married John Tetley in 1980 and he died in 1989. She married Lee Waring Russell on January 2, 2002 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, San Angelo, Texas.
She published two family histories and genealogies and contributed much information for the third and fourth publications of the history of her paternal grandmother. She also published two editions in 1999 of the History of the Olfen Community where she grew up.
As a member of the Woodrow, Texas Home Demonstration Club, she served as president and secretary. She also served on the board of directors of the South Plains Genealogical Society of Lubbock, moving to Granite Shoals in 1980 where she was president of the Burnet County Genealogical Society. Giving workshops and assisting others in their genealogical research was her greatest joy. She was an avid reader of Texas history.
When the Adam R. Johnson Chapter #2498 United Daughters of the Confederacy was chartered at Burnet, Texas in 1985, she was the founding president and received special recognition certificates from the UDC General office in Richmond, VA., the Texas Division in Austin and her local chapter for her work in awarding Crosses of Military Service to sixty-eight former area servicemen. She was also awarded the Jefferson Davis Medal for her historical research and was a member of the Real Great-Granddaughters Club of the Texas Division, UDC, having had two great-grandfathers serve in the military.
She was the first historian of the newly organized Llano Chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1984 with four ancestors who had come from Germany to Texas before 1846. She was a charter member of the German-Texas Heritage Society in 1978 and a member of the Edwards Plateau Historical Association, Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center and the Fort Concho museum.
She received her fifty - year pin and membership certificate from Court St. Monica #1262 Catholic Daughters of the Americas of Olfen, Texas in 1996. As a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Parish since returning to the area in 1989, she has been a member of the HALO Ladies Organization and served on the church Hospitality/Greeters committee.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, parents and brothers Arnold Eggemeyer, Homer Eggemeyer and Emmett Eggemeyer. She is survived by nephews Nick Eggemeyer of GA, Curtis Eggemeyer, Washington, Tyrone Eggemeyer, PA., nieces Becky Moyer, Euless, Bonnie Favor, Houston, Gena Van Teries, Webster and Sandra Fleming, Austin. A special nephew and wife, Wayne and Mileen Kahlich, Brownwood and niece and husband Jeannie and Glenn Thrash of Wolforth.
