Hazel Lee Blackmon passed away peacefully on December 28th, 2019. She was born January 3rd, 1936, in Sweet Home, Texas, to Louis and Elizabeth Gardley. She married the love of her life, Quinton Herklee Blackmon, on June 23rd, 1957, who preceded her in death in 2002.
Hazel’s life was a living example of one of her favorite Bible verses, Ephesians 4:32: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” Not only did she miraculously balance the life of a wife and mother to six children, but she was also part owner of Q & H Janitorial Services as well as the First Lady of San Angelo Greater IME Church. In 1974, Hazel and Quinton established their janitorial business which served the Concho Valley for more than 30 years. Then, on August 21st, 1991, Hazel began loving on the congregation of San Angelo Greater IME as the First Lady and also in the choir, and Minister’s Wives Association.
In addition, Hazel loved traveling, crocheting, working on crossword puzzles, and she especially loved watching Westerns, or “Shoot ‘Em Ups,” as she called them. However, first and foremost, she was a dedicated mom. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as “Nana.” Hazel had a vibrant personality and always made people around her feel welcomed
Hazel is survived by her brothers Cedell and Manual Gardley; her three sons, Michael Blackmon (wife Stephanie), Stacey Blackmon (wife Stephanie) and Fred Blackmon (wife Raquel); her two daughters, Gwen Henderson (husband Jackie) and Marsha Ekeh; thirteen grandchildren, Jason, Drenda, Joshua, Aerin, Ceterra, Spencer, Jonathon, Fallon, Olivia, Emma, JeSelle, Dominic, and Ava; and three great-grandchildren, Nadia, Daylan, and Riley (and one more on the way). She loved each one of them deeply.
Please join us in celebrating her life Saturday morning, January 4th, 2020, at 11:00 am at New Light Baptist Church, 720 W. 16th San Angelo, TX. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
