David M. Smith passed away on September 7, 2018 in San Angelo from a long illness. He was born on December 31, 1946 in Fort Walton, FL to Lt. Col. Roy Edward and Harriet Virginia Smith.
David was a “Military Brat” and he had the privilege of living all over the United States and in Okinawa, Japan. He graduated from Central High School in San Angelo in 1964 and Angelo State University in 1968 with degrees and teaching certificates in History and English. David taught in the San Angelo Independent School District from 1968-1969 when he was inducted into the United States Army. David was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and Stuttgart, Germany. He was honorably discharged in December of 1969.
After his discharge, David had the wonderful opportunity to be employed by the Education Service Center Region 15 until his retirement in 2008 at which time the David M. Smith Science Lab Addition was dedicated in his name. During those years with ESC15, David served in many capacities, the last five of which were as Executive Director. David had the opportunity during those productive years to know, work with, and become close friends with many ESC15 personnel and area educators. While working for ESC15, David continued to pursue his formal education. He received his M.A. in Secondary Education from East Texas State University in 1974. He received his Mid-Management Administrative Certification from Angelo State University and his Superintendent’s Certification from Texas Tech University. David married Marylyn Goetz Tonne on October 23, 1987 and had over 30 wonderful loving years filled with accomplishments and shared experiences. Very few summers passed that you would not find David and Marylyn either in Lake City, Colorado or Ruidoso, New Mexico, or both. They enjoyed participating in family activities, The Rock Box Theater in Fredericksburg, Texas, fishing in Colorado and the banks of the Concho River, always with a cold Miller Lite in his right hand. Preceding his death, were his parents and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Laurene Goetz.
Mourning his passing is his loving, devoted wife Marylyn, son Todd (Misty) Smith; grandson Jayden Smith; Step-Son, Paul (Allison) Tonne; Step-Daughter, Melissa Durst; grandchildren, Brad Tonne, Lauren Tonne, Chris, Anthony and Kandice Durst; Brother, Roy (Diane) Smith, Brother-in-laws Tim (DaLana) Goetz, Kerry (Gail) Goetz, Art (Gerri) Goetz, and Danny Goetz.
The family will accept family and friends from 7-9 PM Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Harper Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at Harper Funeral Home Chapel 11 AM, Wednesday, September 12, 2018 with Reverend Allen Eckert officiating.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Harvey, Dr. David Cummins, Shannon Medical Center Nurses on 5 North, and Meadow Creek Nursing Home for their outstanding care.
