Hubert “Rat” Edwards of Paint Rock, Texas passed away on July 18, 2018 at the age of 86. He was born on January 21, 1932 to his parents John Edwards and Mary Elizabeth Hemphill.
Hubert grew up near Wall, Texas where he was affectionately known as “Rat”. He graduated from San Angelo High School during which time, he was active in showing sheep and lambs at various livestock shows throughout Texas at many of which he won several “Grand Champion” and “Best in Show” awards.
Following high school, Rat was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War during which he served as an engineer and obtained the rank of corporal.
After returning from the war, Rat met the love of his life, Ann Rozzlle, they were married on December 10, 1955. Shortly afterwards, they moved to Houston, Texas where they raised their family. In 1968, the Edwards family moved to Angleton, Texas where Rat pursued his entrepreneur spirit and established the Edwards Overhead Door Company which grew to be a successful and respected business throughout Brazoria County and surrounding area. Edwards Overhead Door employed many area youths who not only learned the garage door business, but the important lessons in life lesson like working hard, doing an honest day’s work, and going the extra mile to help others. In addition to work, Rat was active in the community and his church.
In 1986, Rat returned to his childhood community and purchased a ranch in Concho County, Texas a ranch he once worked as a teenager. Rat raised sheep, cattle and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever he could.
Rat is survived by his wife Ann Edwards and children Vicki Wyse, her husband Patrick “Pat” of Dallas, Texas, Penny Williams her husband John of Pearland, Texas, Dale Edwards of Paint Rock, Texas, grandchildren Stephen Wyse, Christopher Wyse, and Samantha Williams, great grandchild Sophia Wyse, his brothers John “Took” Edwards of San Angelo and Don Edwards of Midland, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brothers George “Jake” Edwards and Eugene “Genie” Edwards and daughter Deborah Ann Edwards.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 27th at Harper Funeral Home, 2606 Southland Blvd, San Angelo, Texas 76904, (325) 340-1850. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, July 28th at 11 a.m. at Harpers Funeral Home.
A reception will follow the service beginning 1 p.m. at Texas Veterans for Veterans, 1905 Pulliam St., San Angelo, Texas 76905, (325) 227-8524.
