Mary Loftin was born on April 3, 1925 on the Byler Ranch, near Knickerbocker, Texas. Her grandparents Jake and Anne Weldy Byler homesteaded in the area in the late 1800's. When Jake and Anne moved to their home in Mertzon, Mary's parents worked the ranch and lived in a cabin home built by Jake, Mary attended school in Mertzon, living with her grandparents during the school year. She graduated as valedictorian of Mertzon High School and was subsequently employed at the Draft Office in San Angelo, TX, where she meet Johnny Wendell while he was stationed at Goodfellow Field.
They were married in 1945 in San Angelo, TX. After WWII, they lived in several West Texas towns during his employment by Safeway Stores. In 1953, they moved to Brownsville, TX to help establish four supermarkets in the Rio Grande Valley and later bought a store on South Padre Island. Mary resided as a homemaker and then business owner in Brownsville until 1982, when she retired and moved to San Angelo.
She met Kennard Moos through friends in the Camping Club and their membership at the Johnson Street Church of Christ. She and Kennard were married in 1989 and enjoyed 22 years together. Mary was an avid fisherwoman, and they spent a good deal of time testing the waters of Lake Nasworthy and Spring Creek, as well other waters across Texas, New Mexico and Colorado while traveling with their 5th wheel camper.
During their marriage, Mary was instrumental in organizing reunions of her family Christmas and Thanksgiving Days on alternate years. She and Kennard were masters at the Texas dominoes game of "42", avid bridge and Scrabble players, and very active socially and spiritually in their church. She was a great cook, and lived in their home on Colorado Avenue in San Angelo until age 90.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to her personal caregiver since 2014, Wanda Cook, who was always there for her. Also to all those who cared for and nurtured her when she moved to assisted living, including the staffs at Beehive, now New Haven, Homes where she lived for the last 3 years; TLC In-Home Care and especially the owner, Angie Conley; Shannon Clinic and Shannon Hospital, whose medical, nursing, and care staff made her whole again so many times; and Baptist Sagecrest, where she received outstanding end-of-life care in collaboration with staff from St. Gabriel's Hospice. All assisted so much in allowing Mary to age in her place, the Concho Valley.
A visitation will be held Saturday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 16th. A graveside service with burial will be celebrated at Mertzon Cemetery at 10 a.m., Sunday morning, June 17th. Friends, family, and caregivers are cordially invited.
A reception will follow in the private home of her niece, Kathy Dolan, and her husband, Mike. The family is planning a memorial celebration of her life to be convened in or around San Angelo later this summer.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Heritage Park of San Angelo (https://www.heritageparksanangelo.com/brick-campaign) towards a plaque commemorating Mary's family as pioneers in the Concho River Valley, something she always planned, but never quite accomplished.
