Doodle Dankworth was a humble, loving servant of God. If you knew her, you lost your best friend this past Saturday, September 30, 2017. She passed away after a long illness at the age of 84. Her family marveled at the energy, love and myriad achievements that they witnessed over the course of her life. Doodle was always there with a smile on her face, a spring in her step and a homecooked treat to share when there was a friend or a family member in need.
A beautiful athletic woman, she was a Ballinger High School cheerleader, football sweetheart, FFA sweetheart, and president of the homemaking club before starting a lifelong nursing career at Shannon West Texas Memorial School of Nursing in 1953. Along the way, Doodle adopted into her extended family her fellow nursing staff, GTE employees, hundreds of friends and fellow civic volunteers. She loved to dance, play bunco, travel, spend time with family and friends and could always be counted on to be the life of the party. For her 80th birthday, over 400 of her friends and family came to celebrate and to thank her for being their friend. A working mother with six children, Doodle was a trailblazer for women. She was always focused on the highest and greatest good for her family, friends, GTE co-workers and community. She served as past president of the Community Action Council Board, Concho Valley Telephone Pioneers, West Texas Rehab Center Board, Edison Junior High PTA and Shannon Alumni. She was active in numerous other civic organizations as a volunteer and board member including American Heart Association, Crime Stoppers, Cancer Society, Holy Angels usher, MHMR, San Angelo Junior League, and San Angelo Symphony Guild. Among her many recognitions were Telephone Pioneer of the Year, West Texas Rehab Billy Mac award, founding member of WTRC Silver Spur Ball, District 16 Nurse of the Year, San Angelo Schools Foundation Angel Award, and Girl Scouts Women of Distinction. Doodle was one of eight children born to Anna Helen Fuchs and Charles Edward Dankworth on May 3, 1933. She was predeceased by her parents and by brothers Charles Dankworth, Ralph Dankworth, Herbert Dankworth and sisters Jeanie Minzenmayer and Laverne Goetz. She is survived by her brother Dan Dankworth, sister Frances Dankworth, sister in-laws June Dankworth, Sheila Dankworth, Sharon Dankworth and Iris Dankworth. She is also survived by children James Edward Jones and wife Brenda, Robert Warren Jones and wife Patty, Charles Morris Jones, Lori Ann Barton and husband Pat, Janet Ann Jones, Becky Jones Benes and husband Lonnie, and 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
