Wayne Edward Ulrich was born June 26, 1934 in Houston, Texas. He passed from his earthly struggle into the arms of the Lord on May 26, 2017 at his home in San Angelo. Wayne was born to Allice Lois Ulrich and James Edward Harkness. At the age of nine Wayne was adopted by Herman F. "Red" Ulrich, a prominent architect in Houston. Wayne attended Trinity University in San Antonio. There he met Mary Elizabeth Mitcham. They were married December 23, 1960. She preceded him in death, passing away on March 8, 2001. He married long-time family friend Janet Linley on August 3, 2001.
He attended UCLA and entered the Army. He achieved the rank of Captain and was the Aide De Camp to a General Officer serving in Germany.
Upon separation from the military, Wayne studied Hospital Administration and started a distinguished career in hospital administration. His career began as an Assistant Administrator at Harris Methodist Hospital in Houston. While there he met and was mentored by Dr. Michael DeBakey. From Houston the family moved to Midland where Wayne became the Administrator at Midland Memorial Hospital. In 1982 the family relocated to San Angelo to be closer to the Mitcham family. Wayne served as Administrator at St. Johns Hospital in San Angelo until his retirement.
Wayne enjoyed cigars, especially the Zino. He began spending time at the Colonel's Pipe Shop, becoming one of the regulars. He became intrigued with the business and eventually purchased the business during the prime of the cigar craze. He took on the persona of "The Colonel" with a handlebar mustache and cigar in hand. He retired again after selling the business to his eldest daughter Mimi.
Wayne was a member of Concho Lodge #1260 A.F. and A.M. and a 32nd Degree Mason. He was Potentate of Suez Shrine in 1990. After his time as Potentate he also served as the Treasurer of Suez Shrine and was honored as a Treasurer Emeritus of the Temple. He was also an Emeritus Board Member of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Galveston Unit. Wayne was a Past Director, Royal Court of Jesters, Court 160.
Wayne was very active in his church. He was a long-time member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church serving in many capacities including Lay Minister. Wayne loved his church and its members. As his health declined he missed being able to participate in the worship services.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Jan; daughter Mary "Mimi" Ulrich Staha; son-in-law David Staha; daughter Karen Ulrich Elms, son-in law Stacy Elms; his four-legged companion Pedro and a special granddaughter McKenzie Linley, a student at Texas A & M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Wayne's memory to Suez Shrine Temple, San Angelo; Shriners Hospitals for Children, Galveston Unit; Emmanuel Episcopal Church or a favorite charity.
