Jim Terry, Sterling County rancher, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. He was a beloved husband, adored father, devoted son, trusted brother and a treasured friend. Born August 30, 1955 to I.W. Terry and Carolyn Foster Terry, he was a lifelong resident of Sterling City.
After graduating from Sterling City High School, he attended Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University. He later returned home to the family ranching business.
He and Sarena Wright Terry were married on July 10, 1999. Their daughters, Maggie and Abbie, were the lights of his life.
Jim was an active and well-respected member of the community. He served on the boards of Tom Green National Bank, First National Bank of Sterling City, Sterling County Underground Water Conservation District, Sterling County Property Tax Appraisal Board, and West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Always a dedicated steward of the land, he was a recipient of the North Concho River Soil & Water Conservation Rancher of the Year Award, which includes Excellence in Grazing Management, Livestock and Wildlife Conservation.
He is survived by his loving wife and daughters; sisters, Susan Terry Connolly and husband Doug, of Austin, Melinda Terry Hinds and husband Jim, of Austin; brother-in-law, David Wright and wife Page, of Hamilton; beloved nieces and nephews, Kelly Faldyn and husband Jeff, Rachel Hinds, Rebecca Hinds, Sawyer Wright, Kelton Wright, Clay Townsend and wife, Lisa, Ryder Hinds. Jim was also a cherished friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carolyn & I.W. Terry; maternal grandparents, Thelma & Roy Foster; and paternal grandparents Ernia & I.W. Terry, Sr.
Paul Bearers are Tommy Bynum, Vic Choate, Charley Christensen, Tommy Corbell, Randy Hord, and Steve King, Larry Wilson. Honorary Paul Bearers are Officers and Directors of First National Bank of Sterling City, including Roger Williams, Scot Long, Jason Cox, Gary Foster, Reed Stewart, Ronnie Hirt, Johnny Copeland, Danny Stewart, Steven Foster, and Leland Foster.
Viewing is available beginning on Thursday at 5:00 pm through early Saturday morning at Harper Funeral Home in San Angelo. Visitation will be Friday, March 17, 2017 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Sterling City. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Sterling City, with burial to follow at Foster Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Texas Rehabilitation Center of San Angelo, First United Methodist Church of Sterling City or a charity of your choice.
