John W. Fields, 70, of San Angelo passed away Monday, February 13, 2017, in San Angelo. John was born December 25, 1946 in Hobbs, New Mexico and adopted by Jake and Jewell Bolling Fields. He grew up in Hobbs and graduated from Hobbs High School. He served his country honorably and proudly from 1966 to 1971 in the United States Army. He received a battlefield commission and was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in the Vietnam War. John was a decorated veteran, receiving the Purple Heart, the VN GAL Cross with PALN and the Bronze Star with Valor. He married Karen Roland on December 31, 1989 and they shared 27 wonderful years together. John was a manager for Radio Shack for over twenty years and, after retirement, he and Karen worked in the insurance business as insurance adjusters for over 13 years. John was a longtime member of Freedom Fellowship Church in San Angelo and loved his church family. He was a charter member of Christian Veterans Outreach and had served as past President. John loved this organization and his passion was helping disabled Veterans get the help they needed by helping them with their VA paperwork and many other needs. John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who devoted his life to his family and helping others. He was a “no-nonsense” kind of guy and was seen from time to time a force to be reckoned with. John was a champion for others in his fight to help Veterans and their families. He held this passion very close to his heart. In his spare time, he was an avid poker player and even played in the Senior World Series of Poker on two separate occasions. He was a marksman, who loved cars (especially Porsches), fine dining, and also had an incredible sense of humor. We will dearly miss our incredible husband and father.
John was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Grayce Stuckey. He is survived by his wife, Karen Fields, of San Angelo; his Son and Daughter, John W. Fields II, of San Angelo and Nicole Wright, of San Angelo; his Four Grandchildren, Spencer, Gavin, Lathan and Isaiah; One sister, June Lackey, Dublin, TX and half-brother John Rudowski, of MI.
