Charles “Chuck” J. Phillips 67, passed away October 9, 2016 after a short, courageous battle with cancer.
Chuck was born to Charles and Martha Phillips on July 21, 1949 in Preston, West Virginia. Chuck grew up in Preston and graduated from Kingwood High School. Following high school, he joined the Navy and soon began his service as a dental technician in Naples, Italy, serving his country during the Vietnam War era. Chuck married the love of his life Becky Phillips (née Mercer) on February 12, 1972, while serving in Naples, Italy. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to San Angelo to make their home. The new family also lived in Woodsboro, TX where Chuck managed a small lumber yard, but soon returned to San Angelo to reside. Here, Chuck began working at City Lumber, a local construction and home improvement business. Chuck spent over 30 years at City Lumber welcoming, helping, and serving tradesmen, contractors, and craftsmen. He was a central figure at this local establishment and contributed to its success throughout his time there. Chuck was a also a master carpenter, loved working with wood and could create almost anything he could think about.
Mr. Phillips is preceded in death by his parents. Chuck is survived by his wife of 44 years Becky Mercer Phillips, a daughter Amanda DeAnda and her husband Danny, their children Carissa Marie, Lacey Mozelle, and Rudy Cooper DeAnda all of San Angelo, TX; a son Charles James Phillips and his wife April, and their children, Grace Ellen, and Francesca Kristina Phillips all of New Braunfels, TX; A sister Phyllis Phillips Jones and her husband Charles D. Jones of Kingwood, WV; sisters-in-laws Sherry Simmons and her husband Tom of San Angelo, Janie Mercer and spouse Lisa Pettingell of Pipe Creek, TX.; brother-in-law James Andrew Mercer of San Angelo, TX. Chuck is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Chuck was well loved by his many friends, neighbors, and anyone who was willing to laugh with him.
A visitation will be held at Harper Funeral Home on Tuesday October 11, 2016, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at Belmore Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 12 at 2:00 PM.
