Max William Knox, 81, of San Angelo, TX, passed away peacefully to be with the Our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He beat cancer but couldn’t beat Parkinson’s disease.
Max was born in Mexia, TX on the 4th of July, 1935. He grew up on the family farm outside of Mexia. He did his homework by kerosene lamp until his family got electricity on the farm. He told the story that The Knox Family had the first electric refrigerator and people came from miles to see it. He grew up farming, hunting, fishing, and training horses.
Max moved with his family to San Angelo in 1953. He graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1953. He married Velma Pearl Parker on March 9, 1956 in San Angelo, TX and were married for 60 wonderful years. Max worked for M-System Grocery Store in San Angelo and then transferred to Abilene, TX where he did a ride along with a Highway Patrolman and knew this was the career for him. He went to the DPS Academy in Austin, TX and upon graduation in 1957 was stationed in Lubbock, TX. After 3 years he was stationed in Post, TX as the first Highway Patrolman in Garza County. Every month for the next 8 years he put in for a transfer to San Angelo, TX and in 1968 was stationed in San Angelo.
Max retired after 28 years as a “red patcher” Highway Patrolman. After his retirement, he went to work at Home Motors with the Taylor boys and later worked for Enterprise ferrying cars throughout Texas.
Max enjoyed watching his kids, grand kids, and great grand kids in all of their activities and sporting events. He loved to hunt all over Texas and especially coon hunting with his dad and brother. Every year when his children were growing up they went to Gunnison, CO for fishing. On one trip he was swept down the river for over a mile and still came out with his rod and a rainbow trout. After his children left home, Max & Velma started to travel and went from the East Coast to the West Coast, to Canada and to Alaska. His favorite spot to go every year was Las Vegas. He also loved to play a good game of 88 with family and friends and a chaw of tobacco. Max was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association for over 30 years.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. Knox, Sr. “Bob” and Mary Knox; brother, Robert F. Knox Jr.; daughter Rebecca “Becky” White; and great-granddaughter, Kadyn Paige Wilson.
Max is survived by his wife Velma, as well as his son Clifton “Clif” Knox and his wife Judy; Son in law Michael White; four grandchildren Bo Knox, Misty White, Dusty White and his wife Jennifer, Rindi Wilson & her husband Stephen; along with six great-grandchildren Rylie & Taylor White; Charlotte, Kalyn, & Brynlie Wilson; and Tye Elston; Sister in law Becky Knox; along with wonderful nieces and nephews and their families.
A visitation will be held at Harper Funeral Home on Friday, August 19, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at Southgate Church of Christ on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Burial to follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Max was a man of honor and conviction. He loved his Lord and strived to take care of his family. He was a member of the Southgate Church of Christ.
His passing deeply saddens us but his life inspires us.
