Leonard Ray Boyd, 87, known to many as "Coach Boyd", passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 in San Angelo. He was born November 28, 1928 in Loving, Texas. Leonard was a 1947 graduate of Graham High School in Graham, Texas. He attended Ranger Junior College and graduated in 1952 from Daniel Baker College in Brownwood, Texas. Leonard married Mary Jo Thompson almost 64 years ago, on August 6, 1952 in Graham, Texas. He coached for 41 years in various school districts including: Newcastle , Brady, Lakeview High School, Fort Stockton, Seminole, and Midland, before retiring in 1993. Leonard enjoyed spending time in his garden and working in his yard. His favorite pastime was sitting on his porch and visiting about football with anyone who would listen, which always brightened his day. Leonard was a man of great influence on those around him and he will be missed dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Morris Dewitt Boyd and Annie Ermie Queen Boyd Brown; and sister, Mildred De Long.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary Jo Boyd; a son, Marvin Boyd and his wife, Mary Ann; a daughter, Carol Ann Kelley and her husband, WIlliam; four grandchildren, Jennifer Barnes and her husband, Troy, Chad Kelley, Melissa Boyd, and Matthew Boyd; six great-grandchildren, Josey Barnes, Donie Barnes, Macee Barnes, Trista Kelley, Alyssa Kelley, and Caleb Kelley; one great great-granddaughter, Camdon Wasson; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM today at Johnson's Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Havlik. Interment will follow in the Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Dan Gandy, Bill Jordan, Gilbert Duran, Mike Sanders, Dan Irons, and Billy Lloyd serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Chad Kelley, Josey Barnes, Matthew Boyd, and Caleb Kelley. The family requests memorials be made to the Midland Retired Teachers Association and Village East Retirement Community in San Angelo.
