Mrs. Ida Lee Hicks passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Shannon Hospital. Mrs. Hicks was born April 10, 1919 in Jewett, TX to Selmo Perkins and Beulah Robinson. She had one brother, Willie who preceded her in death as well as her parents. The family relocated to Chickshaka, OK during Ida’s school years. After completion of high school she enrolled in Langston University where she met Joseph.
After Ida and Joseph marriage they relocated to St. Paul, MN. During World War II, Mrs. Hicks joined the Army in 1943 serving until 1946. Afterwards she began her career as a Librarian. After Joseph’s retirement they settled in San Angelo and united with St. Paul Baptist Church where they worked faithfully until moving to Christian Fellowship Baptist. There she served as Mission President, choir, musician, deaconess and Sunday school teacher.
Many will remember Ida as a serious, strong and faithful woman of God. While she truly loved her husband, Joseph, her first love was Jesus and she wanted everyone to know it. She had many interests that kept her life full and expanded her circle of friends.
Having no children, Ida adopted the Clarence and Rodessa Grays family soon after relocating to San Angelo. Proudly, she acknowledged them as her children. When they relocated from this area, she then embraced a very strong bond of trust with her best friend, Gloria DeWitt, who faithfully cared for her until her death.
She is survived by her children, Clarence and Rodessa, grandchildren, Jeff, Cory and Terry Smart, her best friend Gloria DeWitt, a host of relatives and other friends.
The Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, June 9, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
