Rosa Montemayor of San Angelo died on Feb. 10th at home with her family and with hospice care. She was born Dec. 7, 1929 in Nueva Rosita, Mexico.
Rosa met Jose Guerra Montemayor in June 1959 and married seven days later. Rosa and Joe were married 57 years.
She is preceded in death by her sister Carmen Cortez, her parents, her brother Jesus Lara, and grandson John Anthony, II. Family survivors include her sister Dolores Oropeza; her spouse Jose Guerra Montemayor; three children: Christy and Frank Perez of Tuscola, Texas, Alejandro and Eva Montemayor and Mary and Jeff Durkay, all of San Angelo; grandchildren: Nicole and Joe Key, Philip Perez, Laura Perez, Jerry Mares, and Alejandra Montemayor; great-grandchildren: Jaylee Rose, Makenna Jo Key, and Christopher Trajan Perez.
Rosa was a long time resident of San Angelo. She worked at St. John's Hospital until she retired. She loved her life with Jose at their home outside of town where they raised farm animals. They were able to see and help raise their first granddaughter, Nicole, and then years later, Alejandra Montemayor. It was with great honor that Nicole brought her daughters so that they too would know and say Guelo and Guela (Lela), and that they would live very close by and visit often.
Rosa was an active and proud member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, where she sang in the choir, was a Eucharistic Minister, and a member of the Sociadad Guadalupana. Rosa volunteered her time at the church making tamales, enjoying the walks to the Stations of the Cross, and socializing with church members. Rosa stayed active until she became very ill, and spent time in the hospital and skilled nursing until she came home.
Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12th in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. The rosary will follow at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel. Mass of Christian burial is at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13th at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Fr. Lorenzo Hatch will officiate. The burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in San Angelo following the service.
The family of Rosa would like to thank the Encompass Home Health Nurses and therapists for being there for Guelo and Guela Montemayor's health care, for making the hard decisions in knowing when hospice care is needed, and for saving their lives. Also, thank you to the Hospice of San Angelo caseworkers, nurses, and aides that helped the family in their journey through hospice care. They made the end of life process more acceptable for the family, and we appreciate all of their help.
