Hubert Jay Russell went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 17, 2015 at Reagan County Care Center in Big Lake, TX at the age of 90. He was born October 19, 1924 in Weatherford, Texas to Joseph William and Elza Freer Russell. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Jay lived a full and fascinating life with so many stories that he loved to share with his friends and family. Some of his favorite times were living in Ruidoso during the summers, working at a flower nursery. His specialty was roses, which he loved. He would come back to Big Lake during the winter where he enjoyed being a part of his church family at First Assembly of God. They were such a great part of his life and he cherished everyone there. He went to Grandma's Kitchen at least twice a day where he would eat his meals and keep up with all the activities of the towns people. Jay never met a stranger; anyone he introduced himself to would be considered a friend within minutes. His hobbies included working on old cars, especially his "wagon", and giving out one of his many caps to anyone and everyone. Many people have said of him, "He got everything he could out of his life, he didn't waste a minute." Jay will be missed by so many, but anyone that knew him knows that Jesus was #1 in his life and he is happy to be with Him today.
Jay is survived by his family: Bill Russell and wife Judy of Houston, Catrina Harper of Ft. Worth, Marty and wife Robin of Big Lake. Grandchildren include Steven Russell, Travis Russell, Sarah Harper, Ethan Harper, Parker Russell, and Hayden Russell. A host of friends were left behind to pass on his stories, a little bit of his wisdom and hopefully a few laughs.
A memorial service will be held in Big Lake on July 27th at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Pastor Gerald Bastin officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
The family appreciates condolences and requests that any memorials be sent to Reagan County Care Center in Big Lake, or Hospice of San Angelo.
