Joe Draper, 76, of Bronte went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 23, 2015. A celebration of his life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Bronte on Friday, June 26 at 10:00 a.m., the Reverend Everette Boyce officiating, assisted by David Bailey of San Angelo. Visitation with the family will be held Thursday, June 25 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Bronte.
Joe was born August 20, 1938 in Lubbock, Texas to Buel and Vern Draper of Tahoka. Farming and Ranching in Lynn, Terry, Tom Green, and Coke counties, he loved working with cows and horses, and “buddying up” with his compradres to work calves. Fall was a special time: hunting with sons, and 42 with deer hunters and special friends. A stock tank provided many afternoons of fishing pleasure for grandkids, and feeding the cows allowed ample opportunities for a good joke, a poignant story, or an appropriate life lesson. A faithful member of First United Methodist Church, Bronte, Joe served his Lord and others in many capacities: Relay for Life, United Methodist Men, church committees, Emmaus, Epiphany, building maintenance, all in all, the epitome of service to his fellow man and a godly example to his family and friends. He gave two years to his country, serving in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Glenda Young Draper of Bronte and two sons, Troy Draper and wife Scotty Draper of Beeville and Randy Draper and wife Laura Draper of The Colony; eight special grand-children whom he loved dearly: Levi, Sarah, Thad, Faith and Trisha Draper, and Mollee, River and Cotton Carr; brother Milt Draper and wife Dorothy of Tahoka; sister Nancy Turner and husband Wayne of Copperas Cove; four beloved nieces and their families; and many cousins and good friends.
Memorials may be sent to the Bronte Health & Rehab Center, the Bronte First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, and the Bronte Fire Department Building Fund.
The family expresses deepest gratitude to the staff of the Bronte Health and Rehab Facility and Gentiva Hospice of San Angelo.
