Carol Cottingham Miles passed away on June 14, 2015. Carol was born on September 18, 1935 to Rose and Virgil Cottingham. She attended San Angelo Schools and loved to participate in class reunions. Carol spent childhood and young adult summers at Camp Waldemar for Girls in Hunt, Texas. Her daughter and three granddaughters continued the camping tradition even today. She loved the Hollins Abroad program, and studied at the Sorbonne and Institute Britainnique in Paris for a year during college. She later taught elementary school at Rio Vista after graduating from Hollins College in 1957 in Roanoke, Virginia. Following her marriage to Bradley Miles on October 9, 1965, in San Angelo TX the couple lived in Abilene for three years while Bradley served as District Attorney before returning to their hometown San Angelo. After settling in College Hills, she served on Boards including San Angelo Symphony for over 50 years. She was a Board Member for the Angelo Civic Theater, the ASU West Texas Foundation, and served as President for both the San Angelo Symphony and Symphony Guild. Carol was heavily involved in her hometown including First Baptist Church where she was director of its Homebound Ministry for over 20 years. She was also involved in Fort Concho Association, Pocahontas Chapter of DAR, Leading Ladies, Friends of the Library, Junior League, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, Adult Literacy Council, Santa Rita Homeowner Association, PTA, and El Camino Girl Scout Council.
She is survived by her loving husband of almost 50 years, Bradley, daughter; Melanie Miles Hirschfeld of Austin, son; M. C. Cottingham “Cottie” Miles and his wife Ashley of San Antonio. Carol’s grandchildren, Jacy and Miles Hirschfeld of Austin, and Elise and Catie Miles of San Antonio. She is also survived by her adorable pug, Tracy, who will miss her daily. She is also survived by her dear friends, Ray Durham and Carmen De La Garza of San Angelo.
In recent years Carol and Bradley traveled extensively, yet they always loved returning to their home in Santa Rita.
Private burial in Fairmount Cemetery will be followed by a celebration of life service for Carol at 1 PM on Wednesday, June 17 at First Baptist Church, San Angelo with Dr. James Hassell officiating.
Pallbearers are Bobby Fletcher, Jim Jones, Richard Mayer, Robert Rowland, Darrell Smith, and John Parsons of San Antonio. Honorary pallbearers are George Hill and Jack Landers.
Any memorials to your favorite charity or to hers, the San Angelo Symphony, will be greatly appreciated. Services are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
