Shirley was born October 14, 1929 in Brownwood, Texas to Charles Davis and Josephine Sandlin Bowden. She grew up in the Brownwood area and graduated from Brownwood High School. Shirley married Charles A. Alford on July 23, 1948 in Brownwood Texas and they shared 54 beautiful years of marriage together before Charles preceded her in death in 2002.
Shirley began a career at the San Angelo Standard Times as a reporter in 1961. During her tenure at the Standard Times she generated numerous columns which endeared her to many readers. "By The Way" and "Action Time" were among her more popularly read columns.
Shirley retired from the Standard Times in 1994 but never stopped writing. Early in retirement she discovered personal computers, email, the internet, and Facebook. She loved using the "new technology" to maintain a lively, almost daily correspondence with friends and family from California to Alabama, wearing out several PCs along the way. Visitors would always find her in "the office pecking away".
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, and her sister Sharla Lee. She is survived by her loving family, sons, Joe Alford and Karen Tims, of San Angelo and Jim Alford, of San Angelo; her Grandchildren, Aaron Alford and his wife Sarah, of Cibolo, TX, Sandra Englert and her husband Jason, of Fredericksburg, TX, Kevin Tims and his wife Rachel, of Knickerbocker, and Tammy Gully, of San Angelo; her great grandchildren, Quinn and Davis Englert, of Fredericksburg, TX, Katelyn Alford, of Cibolo, TX, Samantha and Austin Tims, of Knickerbocker, TX, and Layton and Ryan Gully, of San Angelo; her Sister, Maggie Page, of California; and her special cousin, Judy Faber, of San Angelo.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff on 4th Floor South at Shannon Medical Center and to Dr. Melissa Powell for all of the loving care given to Shirley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Green House" at Sagecrest Alzheimer's Health Care Facility in San Angelo.
