Orvel Fred Harris passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014. Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday evening 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Johnson's Funeral Home, with funeral services scheduled for 10 am, Wednesday, also at Johnsons.. Burial and graveside services will follow at the Wall Protestant Cemetery.
"Fred" was born October 27, 1929 in San Saba County to Orvel Fred Sr. and Ellen Odell Harris. He graduated from Brady High School, Brady Texas in 1948 and joined the U.S. Navy. After serving 4 years in the Navy, upon honorable discharge, he attended Hardin Simmons College in Abilene for two years, prior to joining his brother-in-law Jimmy Underwood in the Bar-B-Q business there in Abilene After a few years; he opened the one and only Underwood's Bar-B-Q restaurant in San Angelo. After about a year, Fred purchased both the building and business, and renamed it Fred Harris Bar-B-Q. He provided Bar-B-Q to the San Angelo community for over 30 years, before retiring.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons Randy and Johnny, and his daughter Vickie. Also, sisters Inus Underwood and Violet Harris, and brother Elmer Harris.
Survivors include his wife Bobbye Harris of Wall; his sister Betty Hughes of Boerne, Texas; his son Ronnie Harris (Maureen), of Grand Prairie, Texas; his nephew Mel Wisdom (Sylvia), of San Angelo; step-daughter Sharon Allen (Paul) of Arlington, Texas; and step-son David Cave of San Angelo; and many grandkids, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Pallbearers will be fellow "wood carvers" Gary Bendele and Dave Kerry, grand nephews and great-grand nephews; Richard Schmidt, BJ Matheny, Tommy Wisdom, and Tyler Wisdom.
In lieu of flowers and donations, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Meals for the Elderly.
