On May 8, 2014, Maurice Simmons, age 90, "Aunt Pete" to family and friends, entered into the embrace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ following a brief illness. Aunt Pete was born on Oct. 20, 1923 in Mexia, Texas to Reace S. and Velma V. Hutcheson, both deceased. Her life was lived joyfully as a wife, mother and homemaker. She was the widow of Ernest Nathaniel Simmons, a long time Austin firefighter and the mother of David Lawrence Simmons, deceased. She has been a resident of San Angelo since 2006, following her retirement as manager of the Hardin House Ladies College Dorm near the University of Texas in Austin. There is a special place in our hearts for the generous and caring people at Gentiva, formerly Odyssey of San Angelo, who provided hospice care for her during her need and for the good will expressed by Pastor Brandon Clark and his family of Celebration Church who bring solace to those who grieve, who brought comfort for Aunt Pete. Never to be forgotten is the professional services provided by Megan Vick and Tina Luna of Gentiva and the special in-home service lovingly given by Patricia Arrington, a family friend. Mrs. Simmons is survived by granddaughter Kelley Marie Simmons and great-granddaughter Alexandra Simmons, both of Universal City, Texas; sister Frances C. Denny of San Angelo; nephew Stanley E. and wife Patricia A. Denny and niece Gail Ann Denny and husband Charles Simmons, all of San Angelo; grand-nephews Charles S. Denny of Seattle, Washington, David Palguta of San Angelo, Anthony Palguta of New Braunfels, Texas, Stephen Palguta of Houston, Texas and Joseph Palguta of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous great and grandnephews and nieces and cousins. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
