Marvin L. Kantro, age 89, of San Angelo passed away April 11, 2014 in San Angelo, Texas. He was born December 30, 1924 in West Des Moines, Iowa. He lived in San Angelo, TX for 65 years. He met Dorothy Moore in Portland, OR after World War II and they were married in Chicago on February 21, 1946. Shortly thereafter, they moved to San Angelo to live where he could hunt and fish. He began his career with the Goodyear Tire Testing Facility in June 1948 and retired in 1987. In 1952, their only child, Frank L. Kantro, was born. The family moved from their residence on St. John's to their paradise on the shores of Lake Nasworthy where he welcomed friends, family, strangers, and recycled teenagers to the very end.
He served his country in the US Coast Guard during World War II from September 1942 to November 1945. He was a landing barge coxswain and participated in invasions of Okinawa, Iwo Jima, and Tarawa.
Kantro is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Kantro; his son, Frank L. Kantro; his father and stepmother, Frank D. and Ollie Kantro; and mother-in-law Hartie Moore. Survivors include his grandson, Dane Kantro and his wife, Christi, and his great grandchildren, Shelby Nicole, Lyndsey Renee, and Michael Leon all of Temple, TX; sister-in-law, Barbara McCoy, of Abilene and numerous nieces, nephews as well as special friends John Perlowski, Mary Jo Thompson, Bernie Pratt, and Piney Montgomery.
Pallbearers will be Marshal Gray, Rick Canada, David Jenkins, Danny Dean, Victor Niedzwecki, and J.D. Gould. Honorary pallbearer will be John Perlowski.
The family requests that memorials be made to Holy Angels Church Building Fund or their favorite charity.
A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Charles Greenwell officiating. Interment will be held at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens immediately following the mass.
