Bernice Johnston, 95, a longtime resident of San Angelo, passed away on January 6, 2014 in Austin, Texas. Born in Ada, Oklahoma on November 11, 1918, Rosie graduated from Ropesville, TX High School where she played on the basketball team. She graduated from Texas Technological College in Lubbock with P.E. and Spanish as her major and Education as a minor.
Rosie is survived by her daughters Carolyn Johnston Frost and her husband, Eldon, of McKinney, Texas and Janice Johnston Williston and her husband, Chris, of Austin; four grandchildren and their spouses, Julie Frost Ausere' and husband, Mike of Hartford, Connecticut, Laura Frost Stevenson and husband, Steve, of Greenville, South Carolina, Erin Williston Bloss and husband John of Austin, and Christopher Williston VI and wife, Michelle of Austin. Rosie, affectionately known as "Nanny" by her grandchildren, is also survived by twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, including Billy Johnston of Water Valley, Texas and Dr. Gary Rose of the Houston area.
Mrs. Johnston was married to the late Charles M. Johnston. Together they owned and managed Johnston's Homestead Supply in San Angelo for many years. She worked for the San Angelo Standard Times during WWII, taught school in Water Valley, Texas and substituted in the San Angelo ISD. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, San Angelo.
Mrs. Johnston moved to Austin in the mid-1990s and was a resident of The Renaissance Senior Residence and The Summit at Lakeway.
Services are at 11:00 A.M. Thursday January 9, 2014 at the chapel of First United Methodist Church of San Angelo with a reception at the church to follow.
