Our beloved Wayne went home to be with the Lord while surrounded by family at his home in Big Lake, Texas on Monday, December 9, 2013.
He was born in Carlton, Texas to James Druid and Nan Levina Jones on September 20, 1931.
Wayne was a servant of the Lord and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Big Lake. He had served his community for twelve years as City Councilman at the City of Big Lake. He was a veteran of the military, serving in the United States Army at Fort Bliss from February 1952, until his medical discharge in August 1952, after suffering for many months with rheumatic fever.
Those who knew him will fondly remember the joy he brought to their lives through his work, his kind-hearted spirit, his generosity, and his hobbies. Wayne loved providing for his family, especially by giving guidance, advice, and a helping hand. He truly loved travelling around the country whether it was by car, RV or motorcycle and was always alongside his twin brother Wade, before succumbing to cancer. The "Jones boys" and the reputation they built and shared are a true icon in West Texas and parts of the Texas Hill Country. Wayne's flair for life, sense of humor, and genuine character touched many people over his lifetime. He left us all better for having known him.
Wayne moved to west Texas in 1949 where he officially started his career. He was retired after thirty five years at Jones Garage, the family owned business he shared with his brother Wade from 1958 to 1992. Wayne leaves behind three daughters, Waynette Foster and husband Michael of Big Lake, Deona Thompson and husband Mike of Big Lake, Gayle Gray and husband Steve of Vernon, Texas, three brothers, three sisters, six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren (plus one on the way), one great-great grandchild, many nieces and nephews, and his "chosen son" Dewayne Franklin. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Leona, his parents, one brother, two sisters, one step-daughter, and one step-son.
Wayne will be deeply missed by his loving family and dear friends. He was blessed to have the loving care he received from his care-givers at Hospice of San Angelo, and the entire staff but especially Anna Fitzgerald, Vicky Childress, and Laura Saldibar, , as well as his daughters Gayle, Waynette, and Deona along with his friend Marie Banks. It kept him with us for a few treasured months longer and until we meet again, he will forever live in our hearts.
The family requests donations to Hospice of San Angelo at PO Box 471, San Angelo, TX 76902 or to the First United Methodist Church of Big Lake at 401 N California, Big Lake, Texas 76932.
Funeral services will be at the Methodist Church of Big Lake on Friday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m.
