Police Identify Abilene Man Killed in Officer Involved Shooting

 

ABILENE, TX -- Abilene police Friday afternoon identified the man shot and killed in an officer involved shooting.  

APD identified the man as 29-year-old Michael Leroy McGinnis Jr.  According to the APD during a news conference, five officers were attempting to serve warrants on McGinnis at an apartment in the 4000 block of South 7th St.  Police made contact with a person in the apartment who confirmed McGinnis was there in a back bedroom.

The officers attempted to negotiate with McGinnis for 11 minutes before he was shot by one of the officers.  All five officers have been placed on administrative leave per policy.

McGinnis was going to be arrested for a felony motion to revoke probation because of two new charges of indecency with a child.  He was on probation for a felony arson charge.

The officer who shot McGinnis was an eight year veteran of the Abilene Police Department.  

Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
