John Dutton Shot & Killed by Abilene Police, Texas Rangers Investigating

 

ABILENE— A robbery suspect has been killed in Abilene after robbing a grocery store Monday.

Abilene Police shot and killed John Kenney Dutton, 70, after he allegedly attempted to rob a United Supermarket.

Information released by the Abilene Police Department says that police were called to the United Supermarket located on the 900 block of North Willis Street in Abilene regarding a robbery around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024.

It was learned that Dutton had entered the store and allegedly pulled a knife and demanded money. Employees locked Dutton outside the store once he left. When police arrived, Dutton was located still possessing the knife.

Dutton refused to listen to officer and was unaffected by a taser and officer opened fire, striking him. Dutton was pronounced dead by a Justice of the Peace and two officers will be placed on administrative leave per department policy.

The Texas Rangers will be assisting with the investigation.
