SAN ANGELO, TX - In 2023, Texas maintained its position as the top destination for relocating individuals for the third consecutive year, as reported by U-Haul's Growth Index. The annual report tracks the net gain of one-way U-Haul truck transactions in comparison to departures for states or cities. Texas led the list, followed by Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
U-Haul processes over 2 million one-way truck transactions annually in the U.S. and Canada, providing insights into do-it-yourself movers. The report acknowledges that its findings may not directly align with overall population or economic growth.
Among the noteworthy states for migration in 2023, Texas outshone others, attracting a significant influx of movers. Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee also experienced substantial relocation activity. Conversely, California ranked at the bottom of U-Haul's list for states gaining population, aligning with net migration trends observed in the 2022 U.S. Census data.

In 2022, southern states exhibited remarkable growth, surpassing 1.3 million new residents, making it the fastest-growing region in the U.S., according to U.S. Census Bureau data. The South's growth of 1.1% over 2021 was primarily fueled by domestic and international migration. Since 2018, the South has consistently witnessed a rise in year-to-year net domestic migration and stands as the most populous region in the U.S., with 128.7 million people.
U.S. Census data highlights Texas as the state experiencing the most substantial population increase since 2022. Over 668,000 individuals migrated to Texas from other states during 2022. Despite nearly half a million people leaving the state, Texas recorded a net gain of approximately 174,000 new residents.
