Man Drowns After Panic on Lake Moss in Big Spring

 

On the 28 of May 2016, at approximately 2:39 p.m., Big Spring Police Department Officers, along with Big Spring Fire and EMS, were dispatched to Moss Lake in reference to a possible drowning. Texas Parks & Wildlife and the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department also responded and assisted.

Witnesses informed officers that David Upchurch, 28, was swimming in the lake with his stepson and his stepson’s friend. Witnesses informed that Upchurch started swimming to shore when it appeared he was in distress. As witnesses began swimming out to Upchurch, who appeared to be panicking. He removed his flotation device and continued his attempt to swim to shore when they lost sight of him as he went underwater. Upchurch never resurfaced.

At approximately 4:20 p.m., Upchurch surfaced as officials drug the bottom of the lake. Upchurch was located just west of the swimming area on the south side of the lake, approximately 50 yards from shore. Justice of the Peace Fitzgibbons arrived on scene and pronounced Upchurch deceased at 4:45 p.m. He was transported to Myers and Smith Funeral Home. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the drowning.
