Georgia Decimates TCU in the College Football Championship Game

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (13-1) and the University of Georgia Bulldogs (14-0) squared off in the 2022 NCAA College Football Championship game on Monday, Jan. 9, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles at 6:30 p.m. Georgia jumped out to an early lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back. The Bulldogs never trailed, and TCU fell apart under the onslaught of the best team in the nation. Georgia flattened the Horned Frogs 65-7.

TCU received the opening kickoff but did nothing with it. After the Bulldogs forced a three-and-out, Georgia’s offense went to work. Heisman finalist, Stetson Bennet, led the Bulldogs on a 5-play, 57-yard drive for the game’s opening touchdown. Bennet called his own number at TCU’s 21-yard line and avoided several defenders on his way to a Bulldog touchdown. Georgia led with 11:01 remaining in the 1st quarter, 7-0.

After Georgia added another field goal off a TCU turnover, the Horned Frogs finally got their act together and got on the board. Davey O’Brien award winner, Max Duggan, led the Horned Frogs on a 5-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Duggan hit WR Darius Davis for 60 yards to Georgia’s 11-yard line. Duggan took scored three plays later from two yards out to put TCU on the board with 4:45 left in the 1st quarter, 10-7.

The Bulldogs looked unstoppable as the Championship entered the 2nd quarter. First, Georgia scored on a 37-yard strike from Bennet to WR Ladd McConkey for a touchdown.

Georgia’s defense forced another punt, but the Bulldogs marched down the field on 11 plays that went 92 yards for another Bulldogs’ touchdown. Stetson Bennett scored his second rushing touchdown of the night from six yards out to extend Georgia’s lead to 24-7 with 8:30 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

Max Duggan threw a rare interception on TCU’s ensuing possession. Faced with a 3rd and long, Duggan loaded up and threw a deep pass to an open receiver. Duggan left too much air under the ball and did not lead his receiver. As a result, Georgia picked him off at the Bulldogs’ 34-yard line.

With time running out in the first half, Georgia's offense scored again. On their fifth straight drive, the Bulldogs came away with points. Another 11-play, 66-yard drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Kendall Milton.

Max Duggan turned around and immediately threw another interception. Georgia blew the game open with 26 seconds remaining in the first half after Bennett hit another touchdown pass. Bennett hit WR Adonai Mitchell for 22 yards. Mitchell beat his man to the outside and made a contested one-handed catch in the endzone for the score.

The Bulldogs destroyed the Horned Frogs in the first half, 38-7. They accumulated 354 yards of total offense and turned TCU over three times. TCU can do its best to mount a comeback, but Georgia looked dominant with two quarters to go.

The Bulldogs did not let up in the second half. Stetson Bennett led several perfect drives down the field and Georgia added an additional 28 points to their total before time mercifully ran out. Max Duggan and the Horned Frogs utterly failed to get anything going offensively, and TCU fell in the National Championship game 65-7.

Georgia outclassed TCU in every aspect of the game on Monday night. The Horned Frogs are an excellent football team. They proved that last week against the Michigan Wolverines. However, the Georgia Bulldogs were on another level. They were head and shoulders above the rest of the College Football world during the 2022 season, and they proved that on Monday.

Stetson Bennett finished the game early in the 4th quarter and went 18/25, 304 yards, and four touchdowns. He finished his career with the Bulldogs as a 2x National Champion.
