Central Boy's Basketball Coach Under Investigation
SAN ANGELO, TX-- An investigation has been opened by San Angelo ISD into the actions of one of their coaches.
Dustin Faught, Central's boys head basketball coach, is being investigated after an alleged incident that happened at the Central Freshman Campus during a City of San Angelo youth league tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6.
SAISD received formal complaints from parents, which prompted the investigation into the incident.
“When the district receives a concern regarding one of our athletic programs, we look into the matter and respond immediately," SAISD Director of Communications Derrick Jackson said in a statement. "All reports are taken seriously and researched thoroughly. Personnel matters are confidential in nature.”
Our source sent us a copy of their formal complaint to SAISD. They wish to remain anonymous.
The complaint says that coach Faught was at the tournament for the 14-and-under division. The complainant says in the letter that the initial thought to Faught's appearance was that it was "a good will gesture, to show support for youth athletics in San Angelo."
The complainant also stated that their child is not a current SAISD student.
"While sitting in the back gym of the Central Freshman Campus, along with children and parents from four other teams, we learned that coach Faught had malicious intentions in his attendance," the complainant said in their letter.
The complainant said they observed Faught walk on to the court during a stoppage of play and address and yell at several kids from one team. The complainant said they heard Faught tell the kids "they were no longer playing basketball for Central."
The complainant said that coach Faught then addressed the coach of the team of 14-year-olds. According to the letter, he told the coach he "would never coach another Central player" before yelling obscenities at the coach.
"During the remainder of the game, coach Faught continued to intimidate and menace players, focusing on three SAISD players," the letter states. "His agitated presence made it very uncomfortable for everyone in attendance. He chanted "T-L-C-A" while pointing to players. Later in the game, coach Faught walked in front of the player bench and (the coach) and the score table to engage with the coach of the other 14U team. He shook hands with the coach and was overly vocal about his support for the other team."
The complainant would go on to express their personal displeasure in the letter.
"In 13 years of participating in youth sports, I have never seen such a display from a spectator," the complainant said in the letter. "Add to this the fact that this behavior was demonstrated by the varsity mens basketball coach on school property during a non SAISD sanctioned event is reprehensible."
The complainant said coach Faught has been placed on paid administrative leave. SAISD emphasized that personnel matters are confidential in nature and did not comment further.
We reached out to coach Faught, but, at the time of publication, he has not responded.
Faught is in his second year as the head coach for Central.
