Concho Valley PAWS to Resume Adoptions After Mysterious Illness Kills 3 Dogs

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Concho Valley PAWS confirmed that all of the animals that were sick during the wide spread illness that shut down the shelter have recovered.

As previously reported, on Nov. 13, there was an exposure of an unknown substance to the San Angelo Animal Shelter's canine population, resulting in the death of three dogs and widespread canine illness throughout the shelter.

Through the City’s partnership with Concho Valley PAWS, immediate medical support was provided to all affected dogs. The issue was unique to canines within the shelter and as a result dog adoptions were suspended until the animals had completed treatment and regained health. 

"While this issue is an ongoing criminal investigation with the San Angelo Police Department, are happy to report that all dogs receiving treatment are doing very well and will complete their treatment on Friday allowing us to resume adoptions on December 11," stated Jenie Wilson of the Concho Valley PAWS. "As this health crisis comes to an end, we are glad to report that our efforts prevented additional deaths."

Although the majority of dogs did survive, the vet bill is putting a bind on the shelter.

"Concho Valley PAWS provided for the medical care of over 200 dogs over the last 30 days costing the organization over $13,000," stated Wilson. "While the outcome is even better than what we had hoped for, we now must work to make up for the unexpected expenditures."
