New Trash Services to Begin Monday, April 3

 

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – After several months of debate between the City Council and Republic Trash Services, the new bulk pickup and recycling trash services will begin this coming Monday, April 3.

With the new service, residents of the San Angelo community will now alternate on a weekly basis between the two additional trash services. The pickup schedule for tan garbage bins will continue as is and will be emptied weekly.

Beginning next week, people living in the red zones will have their recyclables emptied, while those living in the blue zones will have their bulk picked up. The following week, on their designated days, residents will alternate their trash cans. Those who had previously set out their bulk will now set out their recyclables, and vise versa.

Bulk items should be placed at least 3 feet away from the tan bin to avoid interfering with weekly trash collection and should not be placed in front of any trash bins.

The frequent bulk service, the City says, will accommodate the collection of yard waste such as leaves and grass clippings. Yard waste, which is not recyclable, may also be placed in the tan bins. The City reassures residents that the new contracted rate for service will not increase citizen’s bill rates. 

Bulk items include furniture, appliances, mattresses, barbecue grills without propane tanks, toilets, fencing, wooden pallets, bags of yard waste, and brush and limbs cut and bundled of no more than 4 feet.

Items such as household trash, tires, concrete construction materials, glass, hazardous waste, roofing materials, propane tanks, soil and rocks, are non-acceptable bulk items. All of these, with the exception of hazardous materials, e.g. paint and propane tanks can be taken to the landfill. City water customers who bring a bill and photo ID with a corresponding address to the landfill can get one free monthly dumping. 

For residents interested in using their recycling bin, Republic’s curbside recycling is an all-in-one program. This means all recycles can be placed into the same bin, but they must be clean, empty, and dry. The following items should be placed in the green recycling cart:

  • paper: shredded paper along with newspapers and inserts, mail, magazines and catalogs, phone books and assorted, mixed paper
  • plastics: jugs, bottles, tubs, and cups
  • cardboard – cereal boxes, paper or frozen food boxes, and corrugated cardboard
  • cans – aluminum cans, clean food cans and aerosol cans

Below is a list of what not to recycle:

  • Plastic grocery bags
  • Waxed cartons
  • Batteries
  • Styrofoam, including food containers, cups and packing peanuts
  • Glass
  • Foil
  • Pill bottles
  • Plastic or metal clothes hangers
  • Light bulbs
  • Frozen food bags and chip bags
  • Hazardous or toxic product containers (ex. paint cans or lighter fluid containers)
  • Food and wet waste
  • Food-contaminated paper plates and napkins
  • Appliances and electronics
  • Bubble wrap
  • Garden hoses
  • Rubber balls and sports equipment
  • Tires
  • Wood
  • Yard waste

For residents needing a second green recycling bin, please call 325-657-4323 or visit the Water Customer Service office located at 122 W. 1st St. for a free recycling bin. Recycling bins will be free of charge until October 1. At that time, the City will charge a $21.18 fee for it to be delivered.  Those who have already paid the $21.18 fee for a second recycling bin will have the charge removed from their account, effective April 1.

Under the new automated garbage collection and curbside recycling, each home’s tan-colored trash cart will be emptied on a weekly basis. Tan trash carts should be reserved for bagged household waste and bagged grass clippings and leaves.

On residents designated trash collection days, residents should bring roll their carts to their front curb or within 2 feet of their alley by 7 a.m. The cart’s handles should be facing backward toward the home. Carts need to be placed at least 3 feet (approximately one medium-sized step) from each other, from trees and from mailboxes, and at least 5 feet from any parked vehicles. This ensures the carts can be emptied via the controls inside the new automated trucks. Once emptied, customers should return their carts to their homes.

Special pick-up services will be available at no additional charge to disabled customers who cannot move the carts. To receive that service, customers must fill out and submit a disability exemption request form.

I think having an oversized piece of (S) equipment called the curroto can was the worst idea anyone could've ever come up with. I see the drivers constantly struggle to drive and operate it, and be expected to never be behind. It's not made for the streets here, and whoever come up with the idea and supported it, living the dream or not, they should've been held liable for all the damages done these past 2 years and be fired. I know the operations side of RS is non ethical, especially the management, they never cared for the product or service just the bottom line. I heard they like stiffing their employees too, thank goodness for TDS in the rural areas... I'd burn my trash b4 I give RS a dime or even a piece of my trash. Have you seen the landfill? What a joke, and the recycle center? I'd fire the whole management team in operations from the GM down. Keep SA clean by disposing of RS.

We need to go back to the way it was, with the trash company picking up ALL garbage left on the curb twice a week, and those ridiculous eyesore bins gone for good. It isn't the job of ordinary citizens to sort garbage in accordance with the trash company's wishes. It's the job of trash companies to pick up the damn garbage, and if they want it sorted, let them do the damn job themselves once they have it. They have one job, to collect garbage. Not to leave bins on the side of the street just because a lid may be up a bit high. What, do they expect there to be LESS trash the next time they come by? Boot Republic and get a real service, thanks.
