Summer Activites for Kids in San Angelo

 

As the summer months begin, so do the activities in San Angelo. Organizations across town work hard every year to provide kids and parents the opportunity to enjoy a wide selection of events that are either free or very affordable. Here are some of the events going on in town during the summer:

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA)

Art Thursday (3 p.m.- 6 p.m.)

Every Thursday, the museum opens its studio doors to anyone who is interested in creating acrylic or watercolor paintings. The museum also offers activities that follow the theme of the exhibit on display. This event is completely free and provides a creative outlet for kids of all ages.

Family Day Shakespeare - June 11, 2016 @ 10:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.

As the Be Theater gets ready to perform on the Concho River, they will be bringing Shakespeare to the museum. Kids will have the opportunity to dress up in costumes, take pictures, play gallery games, eat snacks and participate in art projects that relate to Shakespearean times. This event, and all Family Day events, are free to the public.

Family Day Art & Play - July 9, 2016 @ 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

It's time to get moving at the museum with Zumba, Hip Hop, and Yoga classes. The museum offers the opportunities for families to be active and enjoy the exhibits on display. Classes will be held throughout the day.

For Adults: The museum will also be hosting events geared towards adults and is introducing two new events. Shakespeare will be available at the museum at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Art, Wine & Yoga Nights- 3rd Thursday of Every Month @ 7:30 p.m.

Going on during the Downtown Art Stroll, the museum invites everyone in San Angelo to its yoga session led by fitness instructor Camille Martinez. After the session, those of age will be able to enjoy complimentary wine while receiving a behind the scenes tour of the museum.

DIY @ SAMFA @ 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

During the month of August, the museum will be hosting a series of 3 DIY courses on a variety of topics. The events require registration and a registration fee, but they allow patrons to bring their choice of food and beverages to enjoy during the class.

Weaving 101 - August 10, 2016 @ $25

Admission into the museum is free for any visitors with kids all year long.

Elite Athlete Training Program: June 6 – July 22

This program is designed to promote and improve fitness habits in kids in the 3rd to 12th grades. The program will work on strength, speed, and ability among others. Professional coaches will be leading the camps. The events will go on during different times and days of the week and will be broken down by grade level.

Little Elite Program: 3rd - 5th Grade

Kids will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. The registration cost is $65, and registration information is available on the YMCA website.

Jr. Elite Program: 6th - 8th Grade

Middle school students will meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Registration cost is $95.

Elite Program: 9th - 12th Grade

High school students will meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Registration cost is $95.

X-treme Kidz: June 6 – July 29

The YMCA will offer six different weekly camps for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Each camp will last a week and registration is required. The cost of the camps is $35 for members of the YMCA & $45 for non-members per camp. A $10 discount per camp will be available to students who register for three or more camps. Every camp will run Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Fort Concho

Camp Concho: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. @ June 8, June 15, & June 22

Kids ages under 12 will have the opportunity to experience life on the frontier. Campers will have the chance to explore the buildings at Fort Concho, examine artifacts persevered at the fort, create frontier themed art projects and experience living history. Registration is required, along with a $25 fee for non-member and $20 for members of the Fort. Registration forms can be found on the Fort’s website, or at the Visitor’s Center at the Fort.

Fun at the Fort: 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The fort will also be providing special classes that allow kids to learn about different aspects of frontier life. Every class will be available to kids ages 6-12.The cost of registration is $12 for Fort Concho Members and $15 for non-members. Registration forms will be available on the Fort’s website.

Join the Infantry – July 12

Become a solider for a day! Marching lessons, drill practice and soldiers’ rations will all be part of the activities for the day.

Digging in the Dirt – July 14

Create your own rock art, make a medicine bag and search for clues about the lives of the early Concho Valley. This is a great opportunity to become an archeologist for a day.

Plants & Pioneers – July 19

Have the opportunity to learn how pioneers used the plants around them in their daily lives and their significance in surviving on the frontier.

Southwest Indians – July 20

Explore a tepee, make your own Indian crafts and listen to Indian tales told by a local historian. Live a day in the life of a Indian and even sample some of their most popular foods.

Tracing Your Roots – July 20

Get a start on your family tree with a genealogy lesson. Learn how to research family members and learn about the past of your own family.

Home on the Range – July 22

Enjoy a day in the life of cowboy on the frontier! Learn how to make biscuits, butter and rope and the other essentials in the cowboy life skill set.

Kids Connection: 4 Years – 3rd Grade @12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

This 3-day camp is geared towards smaller children. Kids will be able to participate in games, songs, bible stories and a water day on the last day of camp. There will be two opportunities to participate in this event. Every event is free but requires registration.

June 21- June 23

July 12- July 14

Sports Camp - June 6- June 8 @ 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Fourth to 6th graders will have the opportunity to choose from five different sports to participate in. The camps will be held at Lake View High School and will include scrimmages and games, bible studying and snacks. An awards ceremony will be held the day after the last day of camp. This is event free but requires a registration form.

Overnight Camps @ Brownwood, Texas

Two overnight camps are available for older students. The 4 night/5 day camps will include group games, worship times, team building and water activities, such as swimming and kayaking among others.

4th – 6th Overnight Camp: July 4 – July 8

7th – 12th Overnight Camp: July 18 – July 22

Summer Movie Club House - Every Tuesday & Wednesday @10 a.m.

For those looking to escape the heat of summer and view classic movies on the big screen then this is event for you. Twice a week, Cinemark offers parents the opportunity to bring their kids to view a kid-friendly movie on the big screen for only $1 per movie. A punch card will also be available for purchase; its cost of $5 will cover the cost for the 10 movies shown during the summer.
