STEM Education Initiative: Lead Topic of Discusssion at Desk and Derrick Meeting

A press release today announced that the STEM Education Initiative is the focus of the next meeting organized by the Desk and Derrick Club of San Angelo on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and integrates these four disciplines into cohesive learning with real-world applications. The STEM movement is driven by the country’s need to stay competitive with the rest of the world technically and to equip our students with the knowledge and expertise to work in these industries.

The speaker for this presentation is Dr. Berry Jordan, Project Director for the Hispanic Serving Institution and the STEM grant program at Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas. Dr. Jordan graduated from Angelo State University and later obtained a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of North Texas and the University of Georgia.

Dr. Jordan’s presentation will be based on student opportunities provided by the STEM grant. He will expand on the courses and degree plans offered at WTC under this program such as Petroleum Technology, Process Technology, Wind Energy and Solar Energy.  The grant money has also allowed WTC to upgrade their Science Building. Labs are now equipped with state-of-the-art machines and equipment so that students get hands-on training. A full-size tank battery, along with a full-size wind turbine and 30KW solar energy field is at the disposal of students and instructors, providing a real-world experience for those training.

The Networking lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program beginning at noon, and it will be held at the San Angelo Country Club at 1609 Country Club Rd. The cost is $16, payable by cash or check, and includes lunch. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Reservations must be made by Monday, May 9, by calling Kate Holdridge at 325-942-2237, or by emailing Kelly at [email protected].
