San Angelo City Councilman Thomas Wins Reelection

SAN ANGELO – Veteran San Angelo City Council Single Member District 3 representative Harry Thomas easily won reelection Saturday in the only contested race on the municipal ballot.  The three Propositions dealing with San Angelo's elected Police Chief also passed by wide margins as voter turnout was very light.

According to the Tom Green County Elections Office, only 1,486 registered voters out of 62,087 cast ballots in the Saturday election County wide.  That's 2.39% of voters choosing who runs the city and what the Chief of Police can and cannot do.

Thomas defeated challenger Michael LePak 99 to 56 votes or 66.87% to 36.13% unofficially.  The vote count won't be official until it is canvassed by the City Council.

Here are the results for early, absentee voting and partial Election Day for the Propositions:

Proposition A:      FOR:  786 or 69.68%  AGAINST: 342 or 30.32%
Prop A is adding job qualifications for the chief of police, which in San Angelo is an elected position. The proposition if passed will amend the city charter to require candidates for chief of police have supervisory experience and professional education.

Proposition B:      FOR 817 or 72.11%    AGAINST: 316 or 27.89%
Prob B aligns the chief of police election with the election days of city councipersons in SMD 1, 3, and 5 to reduce the number of elections and costs to the taxpayers.

Proposition C:      FOR 738 or 65.48%.    AGAINST: 389 or 34.52%
Prop C aligns the authority of San Angelo's chief of police with those powers granted by local, state and federal laws and city policies.

I'll be very interested to see what qualifications they come up with. Will it be equitable to give the most qualified a chance to earn the vote? Will the qualifications be set to ensure only certain well heeled, politically connected, local lapdogs have an opportunity?
