Excessive 110 Degree Heat & Wildfire Danger Are Smothering West Texas

SAN ANGELO – With temperatures forecast to top out at 110 degrees in San Angelo, the National Weather Service office has issued an Excessive Heat Warning and a Red Flag Warning for extreme wildfire danger Thursday.

The Excessive Heat Warning is in effect Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. while the Red Flag Warning for extreme wildfire danger is in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Afternoon temperatures should top out between 105 and 110 degrees along a line from Barnhart to San Angelo to Eden and Coleman Thursday afternoon.

Temperatures this high with low humidity and very dry conditions will increase the likelihood of heat related illnesses especially for people who work outside.

Experts recommend everyone drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun if possible and check on vulnerable friends and neighbors.  Wear lightweight clothing, take plenty of breaks and stay in the shade as much as possible.  Heat is even harder on children and pets.  Make sure pets have plenty of shade and water if they must be outside and never, under any circumstances, leave a pet or a child in a locked vehicle.  That would be deadly today.

Wildfires continue to burn out of control and spread across West Texas Thursday.

Extremely high temperatures near 110 degrees will combine with gusty southwest winds and very low humidity to create extreme wildfire conditions generally north of an Ozone to Coleman line Thursday.

With out of control wildfires already burning in the area, residents are urged to avoid all activity that could cause even the smallest spark outdoors.  That includes any outdoor cooking, welding, or hauling trailers with steel safety chains.  Accidental sparks today will cause deadly wildfires.

The excessive oppressive and dangerous heat will continue through Saturday then a cold front will bring much cooler temperatures and greater rain chances to the region beginning Sunday.

This is a very dangerous and potentially deadly continuing weather situation.
