Art Lovers in For Treat at Open Air Museum

SAN ANGELO, TX - One of the great things about San Angelo is that it's spread out compared to other cities of its size, and the City has a lot of greenery. Also in its midst is a local non-profit group that has made its mark by adding to the allure of San Angelo by leaving behind some unusually creative works of art.

 
Over the last year, San Angeloans have either seen, heard, or enjoyed of the walking path stretching from Sherwood Way through the Red Arroyo and ending at Knickerbocker Road. To make the hike a little more aesthetically pleasing, members of Art in Uncommon Places have been placing a variety of sculptures and various fixtures along the way.

Joy Thomas, an event coordinator with AIUP, announced, "Rain or shine, as long as we can see, the Open Air Museum Opening will take place this Saturday, Sept. 10. It's the first one of its kind in the state. Although pieces can be seen around town, the area that all the events are going to be focused on Saturday is the Millbrook Loop across from Unidad Park, at 3245 Vista Del Arroyo, off College Hills Blvd."

Initially, an Artful Run was scheduled, but Thomas said, "We are going to postpone the run until a later date, [so] as not to take away from the Wounded Warriors and P.O.W. events that are scheduled on the same day; everything else on schedule will continue as planned."

Included in the day's events, patrons will be able to observe Stone Carvers, Rock Stackers, and a Plein Air Artist. There will be a $1,000 Sculpture Design Challenge in which five teams have signed up for starting at 3 p.m. on Friday and ending at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, "Our children's art museum is going to be amazing," said Thomas. "There will be five or six events for children as well. Food trucks, cupcake & spirits tasting, and yoga are just a few of the festivities available; but, as for the art work, it's a free opportunity to experience the transformative power of the arts. We've put out almost 50 pieces (of art) since January with plans to do another event next January."

Thomas added that one recent piece was Artist Joe Barrington's creation of 'Gabion Man' on Sherwood Way by Freddie's.

"He was filled with rocks this week by his sponsor, Paul English of West Texas Steel," she said.

Thomas also noted, "We don't want to saturate the area with pieces as to take away from the beauty of nature, but there are places that will accommodate the art well."
