Angelo State University Hosting Elderly Fraud Awareness Event

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University will host a cybersecurity and fraud awareness event designed to educate senior citizens, their families, and others about financial fraud awareness and prevention on Friday, Oct. 27, in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive.

Titled "Cybersecurity & Fraud Awareness: Recognize. React. Defend." the event will run from 8 a.m. to noon in the University Center's C.J. Davidson Conference Center and is free and open to the public. Breakfast and coffee will be served.

In 2022, U.S. citizens over the age of 60 lost a reported $3.1 billion to fraud, according to the FBI's Elder Fraud Report. This was up 84% from 2021, with further expected increases in the future. Alarmingly, Texas ranks third in the nation for states with the highest amount of financial fraud against individuals over 60. Scams, whether by phone, text or email, or in person, continue to become more sophisticated, and it is imperative for people to know where to turn for support.

Angelo State has partnered with First Financial Bank, the CyberTexas Foundation, and the Concho Valley Technology Alliance for this event to provide greater awareness of the elder and financial fraud occurring in our region. Banking, law enforcement, and cybersecurity professionals will give direction on how individuals can protect themselves and others from these devastating scams. Attendees will also be able to submit questions and seek support.

Additionally, attendees will hear from a panel of individuals who have been directly affected by elder and financial fraud. They will tell their stories to try to prevent others from suffering the same negative experiences.

Seating is limited, and the event will also be live-streamed. Those interested in attending, whether in person or via streaming, need to register in advance at angelo.edu/fraud-awareness. The live-stream link will be provided to everyone who fills out the electronic registration form.
