United Way Project: United We Read is Today!

SAN ANGELO – United We Read, a project of the United Way of the Concho Valley, is being held on Wednesday, April 5th. United We Read was implemented to raise awareness of the importance of reading to and with children and to assist United Way in their priority of ensuring grade-level reading by third grade.

Thanks to sponsors Atmos Energy and H-E-B, over 1,800 second graders, across the 14 counties of the Concho Valley, will receive their very own copy of “A Bad Case of Stripes”, by David Shannon and craft materials for them to create their own version of Camilla, the main character in the book. Volunteers from local communities will read the book aloud to students and assist them with the craft.

Second graders from the following schools will receive books and crafts through United We Read:

Ballinger ISD, Bronte ISD, Christoval ISD, Crockett County CCSD, Eden CISD, Grape Creek ISD, Great Beginnings Academy, Irion County ISD, Junction ISD, Lohn ISD, Mason ISD, Menard ISD, Paint Rock ISD, Robert Lee ISD, San Angelo ISD, Sonora ISD, TLCA- San Angelo, Veribest ISD, Wall ISD, Water Valley ISD, and Winters ISD.

“United We Read is one of our favorite events at United Way. Being able to provide each student with a brand new copy of a book and a craft, truly makes for an incredible day and hopefully a lasting impact on the students. United We Read was implemented to bring awareness to the importance of reading to and with children and having local volunteers makes it even more special,” says Ashley Ammons, President/CEO of United Way of the Concho Valley.

United We Read is an annual event and is looking to expand to more schools next year.

United Way supports the Concho Valley through our 14 Community Partners and believes in the importance of collective collaborative impact. United Way fights for the health, education, and financial stability of all people in the Concho Valley. For more information, please visit www.liveunitedconchovalley.org or call 325-949-3716.
