ASU Range Management Team Takes Second in Recent Competition

Angelo State University’s Undergraduate Range Management Team took second place at the Texas Section Society for Range Management’s (TSSRM) second annual Undergraduate Range Management Examination competition earlier this month in Wichita Falls.

The ASU team placed second with 216 points, behind only the team from Texas A&M University (255 points). Also competing were teams from Texas A&M-San Antonio, Southwest Texas Junior College and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Individually for ASU, Jacob Reicheneker of Tuscola tied for first place out of 23 competitors, Chris Kopecky of Spring Branch placed seventh, Kyle Borroum of Comfort finished 13^th and Zane Maddux of Weatherford placed 20^th.

The competition was conducted during the TSSRM Annual Meeting. It consisted of a timed exam with 52 questions and problems in six categories: range ecology, grazing management, range improvement, range regions, range inventory and analysis, and multiple-use relationships. The exam questions were selected from material submitted by university faculty, industry and government agency personnel, non-governmental organizations and ranchers. The three highest individual scores from each team were added together to calculate their overall team score.

The ASU team is coached by Corey Owens, a senior instructor and research associate in the ASU Department of Agriculture.
