SAPD Identifies Suspect from Today's Stabbing

 

SAN ANGELO, TX - Shortly after 1 p.m. today, San Angelo Police dispatched to the 800 block of Velma Street for the report of a possible stabbing.

A few moments ago, San Angelo Fire Department Medic 3 left a residence with a female to transport her to a local hospital for treatment.

Update 2:05 p.m.

At about 1:11 p.m. this afternoon, San Angelo Police responded to the 800 block of Velma Street for the report of an unknown disturbance.

"Upon our arrival, units located a 31-year-old Hispanic female victim suffering from a stab wound," said Sgt. Travis Griffith.

The sergeant said officials quickly put out a description of the suspect, and the units in the area attempted to locate the individual.

"The officers were able to locate the suspect in question, and he's detained at this time," said Sgt. Griffith. "He's a 31-year-old Hispanic male, and he's being questioned."

Initially, officers detained another individual because he matched the description of the suspect, but he was not involved in this incident. He was, however, arrested for unrelated charges, said Sgt. Griffith.

Currently, officers and members of SAPD's CSI and Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the scene.

Sgt. Griffith added that this is an ongoing investigation and no charges have been filed as of yet. Additionally, no names are being released at this time, and Sgt. Griffith did not disclose the hospital where Medic 3 transported the victim. However, he did say that the victim appeared to be stable, and her wounds not life threatening. 

Update 5 p.m.

This evening, SAPD Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez confirmed the arrest of 32-year-old Steven Rey Ortiz of San Angelo for the stabbing of a 31-year-old woman.

This afternoon, at around 1:10 p.m., SAPD officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Velma Street for the report.

"Upon arrival, officers located a 31-year-old woman suffering from a laceration to her arm," said Gonzalez. "The suspect was no longer at the scene. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital where she reportedly underwent surgery."

Gonzalez reiterated that officers obtained a description of the suspect and immediately searched the area. 

She said, "At approximately 1:15 p.m., Officer W. Bowhay located the suspect (identified as Ortiz) walking near N. Pope and 18th Streets."

Ortiz was transported to SAPD Headquarters for questioning. 

"Following the interview, Ortiz was arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Family Violence and transported to the Tom Green County Jail," said Gonzalez.

This is Ortiz's 19th arrest in Tom Green County, and his bond has yet to be set. His previous crimes include inhalant paraphernalia, drugs, evading arrest and family violence.
