FBI Joins Efforts to Solve San Angelo Cold Case

SAN ANGELO, TX - During this week 28 years ago, law enforcement officials recovered the remains of Sally McNelly and Shane Stewart from the Twin Buttes area. Throughout the years, Tom Green County Sheriff's Office officials said this brutal homicide has remained an active investigation involving many local and state agencies. Today, TGCSO announced that the FBI has been asked to join the investigation and will be actively involved going forward.

"After consulting with the FBI, it was determined that their involvement will consist of Behavioral Case Analysis, investigative assistance and the use of additional FBI resources as needed," said TGCSO.

Officials said both Shane and Sally were last seen alive the night of July 4th, 1988. Sally's remains were recovered on November 12, and Shane's on November 14 of that year. Both died from a gunshot wound.

"This crime was committed locally, and persons within this community have valuable information relative to this investigation," added TGCSO. "Those persons are asked to come forward and do the right thing. Family members and friends have long been involved in this investigation and are anxious for closure."

The public is urged to contact TGCSO investigators with any information related to this case at (325)655-8111, or the FBI at (325)942-8588. Contact can also be made through the TGCSO website crime tip lab at http://www.tomgreencountysheriff.org/.
