McCulloch County Tragedy: 32-Year-Old Man Shot Mother, Charged with Murder

 

MCCULLOCH COUNTY, TX - Yesterday, San Angelo LIVE! reported on the the shooting and death of a Brady woman, Mary Christine Derrick, in the early morning hours at a residence in McCulloch County (see here). Today, Sheriff Ty Tully provided more information into yesterday's tragedy.

He said yesterday, at approximately 3:31 a.m.m the McCulloch County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Brady Police Department, responded to a residence in McCulloch County after receiving a 911 call in reference to a shooting that had occurred. Mary Christina Derrick was transported to the Heart of Texas emergency room where life saving measures were attempted, but sadly, those attempts were unsuccessful.

"Derrick was pronounced deceased at 4:20 a.m," said Sheriff Tully. "A suspect was taken into custody and transported to the McCulloch County Jail."

That suspect was identified as 32-year-old Stephen Charles Derrick, who has been charged with murder, and is awaiting arraignment in the McCulloch County Jail. Sheriff Tully confirmed that Stephen Derrick is the son of the victim.

At this time, the Texas Rangers and the McCulloch County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating this case. 

"I would like to personally thank my entire staff for all the hard work put into this investigation," added Sheriff Tully. "I cannot thank them enough. I also want to thank the Brady Police Department. Their help was invaluable and truly appreciated. Also, I would like to thank the Brady/McCulloch County EMS/Fire. Everyone did an outstanding job. The Sheriff’s Office also would like to thank the Texas Rangers for their tireless efforts in this investigation."
