Abilene Scooter Renter Hospitalized Following Crash with Truck

ABILENE – A Bird scooter rider was hospitalized on Sunday night in Abilene after he was hit by a pickup truck.

According to the Abilene Police Department, on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at approximately 10:19 p.m., the Abilene Police Department was notified of a motor vehicle crash in the 900 block of Grape St. Responding officers determined that the crash involved a Ram 3500 pickup and an operator of a Bird scooter.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the Ram pickup was northbound on Grape, in the inside lane, while multiple individuals operating Bird scooters were also northbound in the outside lane. One operator of a Bird scooter turned left into the path of the Ram pickup causing the collision.

The Ram pickup was operated by a 19-year-old Hawley man and the Bird scooter was operated by a 17-year-old man from Abilene. The Bird scooter operator was transported to Hendrick Medical Center North by Metro Care. He is currently in stable condition.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. However, it is still an active investigation being conducted by members of the Abilene Police Department's Traffic Division.
