2016 Kia Explodes into Flames on Houston Harte

 

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- Shortly before 2 p.m. this afternoon, a four-door sedan became engulfed in flames in the 200 Block of West Houston Harte under the Howard Street underpass.

The San Angelo Police Department (SAPD), Fire Department (SAFD), and Emergency Medical Services Department (EMS) have all been dispatched to the scene. 

A Nixle alert, sent out by the SAPD, has warned drivers that traffic traveling on the eastbound side of the 200 block of Houston Harte is being diverted. 

A LIVE! reporter is on the scene, at this time. At the moment there is no word on the condition of the driver.

This is an ongoing investigation, LIVE! will provide an update once available. 

 

​UPDATE: 3:00 p.m.

​Shortly after  1:10 p.m. this afternoon the SAFD received a report of a vehicle fire on the loop adjacent to Howard and Dallas Street, San Angelo Fire Marshal Ross Coleman said.

Upon arrival the dispatched firefighters found a 2016 Forte Koup Kia fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arrival.

Two passengers were inside the car at the time of the incident, but both males were able to exit the vehicle without sustaining major injuries,

Upon further investigation, Fire Marshal Coleman stated that as of "right now it appears to be some electrical arcing in the line on the floorboard of the car."

No further people were injured as the driver was able to drive the Kia out of traffic and out of the way of passing traffic.

SAPD officers have diverted traffic onto a nearby access road. Please use caution when driving eastbound on Houston Harte as officers begin working on clearing the scene.

Thanks to the SAPD for broadcasting a seldom seen and often thought to be extinct NIXLE ALERT on this traffic impeding incident.
It seem that only a rare even will trigger the NIXLE protocol. I still have my doubts that it's replacement of the WARNING SIREN SYSTEM will be trustworthy for quite some time.
