An Emergency Call for a Grass Fire Turns Out to be a Car Fire Outside of Ballinger

At approximately 8 p.m., the Rowena Volunteer Fire Department received a dispatch to what they believed was a grass fire outside of Ballinger, southbound on Highway 67 heading towards San Angelo across from CR 244. Upon arrival, however, firefighters found a car engulfed in flames.

An official with Rowena VFD said the driver failed to keep his vehicle on the road and took out parts of mesquite trees before bringing the car to a halt. At that point, the car caught on fire, and flames quickly spread to the highway before firefighters made it to the scene. Luckily, the driver got out of the vehicle on time.

“He was alert, conscious, standing and refused medical treatment,” the official said.

In addition to the Rowena VFD, Texas Pacifico was on scene to inspect the railroad that lay a few feet from the now shell of a car that ran off the road.
