Driver Fatigue Contributed to Fiery Saturday Crash

Investigators for the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office have determined fatigue to be a contributing factor to a Saturday morning crash in Wall that ended with a fiery roll into Lipan Creek.

Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the scene near US 87 S. and Roberts Road at approximately 4:35 a.m. on Dec. 28, where they discovered a vehicle fully engulfed in flames near the Lipan Creek bridge.

The driver of the vehicle, Macy Garcia, had managed to exit her car after the crash and suffered lacerations on her neck and right ankle and was transported to Shannon Medical Center for her injuries. Garcia told responding officers that she could not remember what had happened.

Deputy Graham Smith reported that Garcia had been traveling northwest on 87 S. when she entered the median and continued off a ledge. The vehicle then became airborne and landed on the creek’s northwest side, rolled once and landed upright.

While investigating the crash, deputy Smith noted that there were no skid marks or signs that Garcia had attempted to slow or stop prior to rolling, leading Smith to conclude that driver fatigue had played a role in the crash.

Garcia was treated for non-incapacitating injuries at Shannon, and was given a warning for unsafe speed and expired registration.

Members of the Wall Volunteer Fire Department were among first responders, who assisted in treating Garcia until medics arrived and extinguished the flaming vehicle.
