22-Year-Old Jailed for Intoxication Manslaughter after Young Mother Dies in Crash

A 22-year-old man that caused a fatality crash on US 67 on July 13 has been indicted for intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and booked into the county jail.

Evan J. Wilson, listed as living on Hawk Lane in San Angelo, was driving his Dodge Ram 1500 northbound in the southbound lane on US 67, just 6.7 miles north of Miles, at just before 3 a.m. when he crashed into a southbound Honda Civic driven by 35-year-old mother Brooke Abney.

The vehicles collided on the front left side, causing Wilson’s truck to roll in the median. Abney’s Civic traveled to the outside lane and onto an improved shoulder.

Brooke Abney was killed in the crash, and her two-year-old son, James Abney, was severely injured. James was airlifted to Shannon and was in critical condition, and was released back to his family the following day.

The medical team at Shannon told the family the baby should heal well, and released him with staples in his head and a cast on both his left leg and right arm. James was the only child Brooke and Dustin Abney had together, and he will now grow up without his mother.

When the DPS released their preliminary report, they did not disclose their findings as to why Wilson was driving on the wrong side of the road and stated that the crash was still under investigation.

On Dec. 1, Wilson was indicted for intoxication manslaughter and on Dec. 10 a warrant was issued for his arrest. Wilson was booked into the county jail on one count of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and one count of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Records indicate he was released from the county jail on Dec. 11 at 2:15 a.m. after posting a $10k surety bond. No trial date has as of yet been set for Wilson.

A 10K surety bond and this guy is back out on the roads. Of course we are to have faith that he will have good judgement now and not drink and drive. I feel safer already.
