4 San Angelo Charities Receive Health Foundation Grants
SAN ANGELO, TX — Board Chair Mike Boyd announced the San Angelo Health Foundation awarded $178,634 to four area non-profit organizations during the first quarter of 2017. Approximately 202 organizations and 649 projects have benefited from Foundation funding in its 20 years of grant making.
Grants Chair Marilyn Aboussie said these most recent grants encompass education, community improvement and mental health:
Fairview Accelerated School was awarded $6,206 to purchase infant simulators for the Family and Consumer Science Class. Since 1993 Fairview Accelerated School has provided an alternative education program, disciplinary alternative education program and in-school suspension/off-school campus suspension. The FAS serves 12 school districts in the Concho Valley.
San Angelo Lions Charities, Inc. was awarded $50,000 to renovate the Dunbar Library. The North by Northwest Lions club has initiated a restoration project for the Dunbar Library as a historic site. The library was built in the 1930s during the period of segregation to be used by the African American community in San Angelo. The organization's intent is to preserve African American literature, children’s resources for a one-stop research site and create a functioning library with historical books and documents.
Schleicher County Wellness Foundation was awarded $75,723 to upgrade exercise equipment and install flooring for the Schleicher County Wellness Center. The Center opened in 2010 to provide appropriate exercise opportunities and wellness education for the Eldorado community. Staff will upgrade the exercise equipment purchased used in 2010, create a weight room and replace the flooring.
West Texas Counseling & Guidance was awarded $46,705 to hire a new therapist and send two current therapists to LPC supervisor training. West Texas Counseling & Guidance has been providing professional counseling services to the Concho Valley since 1986. The WTC&G provides outreach services to survivors of suicide, a new veterans program and have satellite offices in Brady, Eden, Junction, Ozona, Menard and Sonora.
